It began with her cardigan
A hand-knit cardigan tucked away in a wardrobe.
After losing her mum, Lessons founder Laura rediscovered one of her hand-knitted cardigans. Tucked away in a wardrobe, it felt less like an old piece of clothing and more like a hidden treasure, a work of art, made by hand and entirely unique. But it held something far more important: colour, comfort and memory.
Laura began wearing it everywhere. It felt like being wrapped in one of her mum’s hugs. People would stop her in the street to ask about it, drawn to a piece that already carried a lifetime of its own. It became a reminder that the things we treasure most aren’t always the newest. Sometimes, they are the things that have been loved before us, pieces that carry people, places and stories with them.
Lessons began there.
It began as a way of holding on to a feeling.
A feeling of home.
Of colour.
Of connection.
The designs draw inspiration from heritage, travel, family stories and the belief that clothing can become part of our lives
rather than simply pass through them.
Every Lessons piece is hand-knit by skilled makers in Ayacucho, Peru, where traditional knitting techniques have been
passed down through generations.
Founder’s Note
Long before Lessons London, creativity was simply part of everyday life.
My mum encouraged me to draw, make, experiment and notice beauty in ordinary things. She showed me how colour could transform a room, a painting, even the way you feel. Those lessons stayed with me.
Colour has always fascinated me, not just how it looks, but how it makes us feel. When I began designing, that instinct led me back to my family’s distant Cuban heritage. My great-great-grandmother came from Cuba, and its vibrant colours, patterns and warmth still influence the collections today.
I’ve spent more than twenty years designing clothing, and early in my career I travelled regularly to Lima, working closely with suppliers. I could never have known that, two decades later, Peru would become part of my story again, through the skilled knitters who now bring my designs to life.
Colour always comes first. I believe clothing should lift your mood, give you confidence, make you feel like yourself, and sometimes make someone stop you in the street to ask where it’s from.
Lessons brings together everything that has shaped me: creativity, colour, years spent designing, and a belief that the pieces we treasure eventually become part of our story.
Looking back, I don’t think there was ever going to be another path. Creativity was never a hobby in our house. It was simply a way of life.
